Classes

The education classes provided at Henderson and Walton Women’s Center are conducted by a registered dietitian/diabetes educator (RD/DE).

Due to space limitations and out of courtesy to others, we respectfully ask that only the patient attend HWWC classes. Most classes last for over an hour and some young visitors may become restless.

Monday
10:00 am – Diabetes Education Class
2:00 pm (every other Monday) – Weight Control Class

Tuesday
10:00 am – Glucose Intolerance Education Class
(this may include any of the following diagnoses: pre-diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome or hypoglycemia)

Wednesday
10:00 am – Gestational Diabetes Education Class

Thursday
10:00 am – Cholesterol Education Class

Diabetes Education

Diabetes education is usually covered by insurance. Please contact your insurance for all other education benefits.

Individual consultations with the RD/DE are available upon request.

Class Descriptions:

Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Education Class (2 sessions)

The first 2 education sessions are provided within 2 weeks:

  • Session 1 is a group class providing survival skills. (Instruction on the use of a blood glucose meter and carbohydrate counting)
  • Session 2 and follow-up visits are individual, face-to-face consults. (These are not group sessions)

The diabetes education sessions will address the following topics:

  • Overview of the possible causes and the treatments for diabetes as well as the risks for diabetes complications
  • Review of lab results and the relationship of these results to the risks for diabetes complications
  • Instruction on the use of a blood glucose meter, times for self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG), and SMBG goals (All patients will receive a free meter at the initial session.)
  • Instruction on diet with emphasis on carbohydrate counting and cholesterol-lowering principles (Sample meal patterns provided)
  • Discussion on lowering the risk of diabetes complications
  • Discussion of physical activity recommendations (Physician approved)

Weight Control Class (1 session)

  • Diet recall of daily habits to identify sources of excess calories
  • Discussion of weight management goals, both short and long-term
  • Instruction on current dietary guidelines
  • Instruction on cholesterol-lowering principles to lower the risk for heart disease
  • Discussion of physical activity recommendations (physician approved)
  • Individual follow-up visits available for evaluation, accountability and management

Glucose Intolerance Class

Pre-diabetes, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or Hypoglycemia (1 session)

  • Interpretation of lab results and an explanation of possible progression to type 2 diabetes
  • Discussion of any oral medications ordered by the physician
  • Discussion of follow-up lab testing to be repeated every 6 months
  • Instruction on diet to achieve a healthy weight
  • Instruction on cholesterol-lowering principles to lower the risk for heart disease
  • Discussion of physical activity recommendations (physician approved)

Gestational Diabetes Class (1 session)

  • Overview of the gestational diabetes disease process and possible complications for both the fetus and mother
  • Instruction on the prenatal diet with emphasis on carbohydrate counting (sample prenatal meal and snack patterns provided)
  • Instruction on the use of a blood glucose meter, times for self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG), and SMBG goals (All patients will receive a free blood glucose meter at this session.)
  • Follow-up: SMBG results from the patient’s blood glucose meter will be read at each prenatal visit
  • Instruction on insulin therapy, if ordered by the physician

Cholesterol Education Class (1 session)

  • Interpretation of lab results as they relate to risk for heart disease
  • Diet instruction including label reading for saturated and trans fat
  • Weight control recommendations
  • Discussion of physical activity recommendations (physician approved)
  • Discussion of labs needed for follow-up
